Why Did Many Celebrities Wear Black To The 2018 Golden Globes?

It seems as if the Golden Globes was very different this year. Known to be a bash filled with laughter, booze and excitement, it is taking a slightly different direction.

“Happy New Year, Hollywood: It’s 2018, marijuana is finally allowed and sexual harassment finally isn’t,” host Seth Meyers said in his opening monologue, setting the tone for this year’s awards show.

In addition to this, majority of your favorite stars have walked the red carpet in black ensembles — the ladies wore black gowns while the many of the men even went for black shirts under their tuxes instead of white shirts.

If you think that this is some sort of coincidence, think again — this movement called #TimesUp was actually planned as a sign to stand up for gender equality in the midst of numerous sexual harassment allegations in Hollywood.

“For years, we’ve sold these awards shows as women, with our gowns and colors and our beautiful faces and our glamour,” actress Eva Longoria explained to The New York Times, adding, “This time the industry can’t expect us to go up and twirl around. That’s not what this moment is about.”

While this might seem like a small gesture to some, it is showing us how more and more people (both men and women) are starting to become aware of the realities the industry faces.
