Supposedly, it’s a new social media application that allows you to essentially be real with your friends. The application displays unedited photos of yourself and your surroundings giving you little to no time to “fake a life” for social media. Its main feature is a daily notification that encourages users to share a photo of themselves and their immediate surroundings given a randomly selected two-minute window every day.
The point of the app is to promote authenticity in the midst of the noise of social media popularity. It was created in the year 2020, but only grew to popularity during mid-2022. The app was created by Alexis Barreyat, a French developer who formerly worked in GoPro. It was designed to be the anti-Instagram, where you can’t overuse or get addicted to it.
Aside from this, you won’t even spend long hours editing your photos because you can’t. Unlike Instagram, there is no popularity contest in BeReal. On the contrary, it prefers to show how ultimately normal everyone’s lives are.
