Have your friends tried getting you into BeReal? It’s that black and white colored social media app with the words BeReal. plastered simply as the title. Supposedly, it’s a new social media application that allows you to essentially be real with your friends. The application displays unedited photos of yourself and your surroundings giving you little to no time to “fake a life” for social media. Its main feature is a daily notification that encourages users to share a photo of themselves and their immediate surroundings given a randomly selected two-minute window every day.

The point of the app is to promote authenticity in the midst of the noise of social media popularity. It was created in the year 2020, but only grew to popularity during mid-2022. The app was created by Alexis Barreyat, a French developer who formerly worked in GoPro. It was designed to be the anti-Instagram, where you can’t overuse or get addicted to it.

Aside from this, you won’t even spend long hours editing your photos because you can’t. Unlike Instagram, there is no popularity contest in BeReal. On the contrary, it prefers to show how ultimately normal everyone’s lives are.

So, why use it in the first place? It’s a great social media app that keeps you updated with your friends, while helping you track your memories. You can take a look back at all your past BeReals from your homepage. More so, you don’t feel the need and pressure to put on your best face forward. You can react to your friends photos in the most authentic way and you can post photos in the most authentic way. To top it all off, it’s very low maintenance. You don’t need to think about stories, posts, or polls. You just have to take a photo once everyday during a certain period of time. Easy, right?
