Pre-pandemic, the country’s top A-listers from fashion, beauty, sports, music, film, TV, arts and beyond would dress to the nines (accordingly to theme of course) and gather on the night of June 12 to celebrate extraordinary Filipino artistry and talent—this was called the annual MEGA Ball. Its been two years since MEGA’s annual ball was last held due to a pandemic, but with the world returning to normal and just in time for the magazine’s 30th anniversary, the MEGA Ball is back on its usual berth on the social calendar with a theme that is not one to miss.
The annual ball has always been centered on recognizing the Filipinos who are making waves both locally and globally. This was translated into many themes and titles throughout the years. There was the “MEGA Pinoy Pride Ball” in 2011 where guests wore modern ternos, the “MEGA Millennial Ball” in 2017 which was the time when a new generation of creatives was pushing for inclusivity in the industry, and of course, “MEGA Equality Ball” in 2019 that made headlines for the stars who walked the red carpet were more diverse and unapologetically showcasing who they are.
With the world having to learn to adapt to the constant changes of our world, this year’s event is appropriately titled “The MEGA Ball: A New Era”. Within the 30 years, the fashion magazine’s MEGAverse has grown bigger with a number of new titles such as MEGA Drag and MEGA Active to meet and cater to a more diverse audience. Guests are invited to get to know about them more during the event. MEGA will also reveal the Pinoy Pride Awardees for 2022—this is a list of notable Filipino personalities, brands, companies, or groups, who have made a positive impact on our evolving and independent country. Some of the recipients were MEGA YDC winner Furne One, International designer Lesley Mobo, Lea Salonga, Hidilyn Diaz and Bryan Boy to name a few.
The attire of the ball is also not your usual long sparkly gown and formal suits. With the return of bold style and in consideration of the current fashion climate, MEGA invites its guests to rewind, rework and reimagine their favorite wardrobe pieces to the theme of “Glam Rock: A Performance of Style”. Think sustainable but creative outfits that show off individual style.

The Theme
What does “Glam Rock: A Performance of Style” exactly mean? Glam Rock was popularized in the 70s, mainly in the British music scene when predominantly male-centric bands and their eccentric, flamboyant sense of style accompanied their hard-hitting songs. Not only that but musicians created larger-than-life characters that they played out in a theatrical way like David Bowie’s alter ego Ziggy Stardust and Alice Cooper. They included lots of glitter, bright colors and mayhem to accompany their performances.
From platform boots to feather boas, spandex jumpsuits, clashing colors and animal prints expect that these are the more common styles and patterns you’d find on this year’s red carpet. For beauty, it’s all about scintillating looks filled with metallics or glitter and big hair that can stand out on the dance floor.
The Guest List
While the guest list is not revealed until they start walking the red carpet, some of the biggest names in the industry regularly attend such as top beauty queens Catriona Gray and Pia Wurtzbach, global fashion darling Heart Evangelista-Escudero, multi-hyphenate artists like Nadine Lustre and Maymay Entrata, and veteran designers such as Francis Libiran. Expect that there will also be several young and upcoming artists and creatives who will be walking the MEGA red carpet for the first time.
The Program
This year’s MEGA Ball will also unveil and present its Pinoy Pride awardees. Whether it’s through the world of fashion, business, art, charity, sports and culture, these are chosen Filipinos who continue to bring pride to the country. A special performance by the prestigious Ballet Philippines alongside the hottest and most relevant acts of today is set to heat up the stage and set the tone for the night. And of course, it would not be a MEGA Ball without a dance party that lasts throughout the night.
