Anyone who has ever done a creative job would agree that all the aesthetics of a project does not come in an instant. Before anything gets placed on a cover, it gets screened through multiple people and is presented in re-revised decks. The same goes for our MEGAStyle February cover of Angelina Cruz. Each member of the team had to really think over all the elements that create a cover: fashion, beauty, and art. After a few full days of conceptualizing these elements, the people who are in charge of beauty direction, fashion direction, and art direction send in their decks. If everything is approved, we can move on to shoot. If not, then it’s back to the drawing board.

The most challenging part of it all was when MEGAStyle’s Head Editor, Jeb Fronda, and Creative Director, Jann Pascua, gave carte blanche to the rest of the team for the cover concept. This means that we had more power over the three elements of the cover shoot. As great Uncle Ben would’ve said, “With great power comes great responsibility.” We definitely felt the pressure of responsibility- More so, with the beauty looks. There was actually a time all of us were skeptical about how the hair and makeup translated on cam. So, we ended up changing things up on the spot. We trusted our gut and we couldn’t have been happier. Here’s how we created the beauty looks for Angelina Cruz’s MEGAStyle February 2021 cover.

Pisces ruled by Neptune

If you’ve ever met me, then you would know that I am obsessed with astrology. Since we launched the cover on February 27, which is within the realm of Pisces, I decided to dedicate the first look to the water sign. You could see that blue is the predominant color of the look, but it is complimented by fluid strokes of gold. This is inspired by the swimming fishes of Pisces.

“Angelina is one of the easiest celebrities that I’ve worked with. Even though we changed the beauty direction last minute, she’s still game and didn’t even complain. Overall she’s really fun to work with.”

Year of the Metal Ox

We recently celebrated Chinese New Year in the month of February. In 2021, we celebrate the year of the metal ox. I wanted to translate that to the second look of this cover. Overall, the beauty look is in complete contrast to the first look. If he former is fluid and light, then this one is constricted and dark. You can see that from the stones cornering her face.

“The shoot for me was super fun! The prep was just challenging for me because it was too windy. Good thing Angelina was game and could adjust, so she made my job easier.”

JA Feliciano, Hair Stylist
