The first ever skincare collection from mega-beauty brand BYS is a lesson in simplicity
Whenever I peek into online beauty communities, I get surprised by how much 20-somethings and teenagers put on their faces. Honestly, it makes me panic a little, both as a beauty editor and as a woman who is, ahem, older. Am I not doing enough for my skin? Am I not loving myself enough?
Learning to Love One’s Self—Better and Harder
But yes, I get it. In my 20s, I too had a very regimented skincare routine with many, many products that I had hoped would magically erase all my skin woes. While many young women nowadays are more educated and disciplined about taking care of themselves, I didn’t have the benefit of all this ready information from the internet. If only I’d known better.
Now in my 30s, my skincare routine has scaled down and it’s often dependent on how much time I can devote to it at that particular time. It’s not because I don’t like to take care of myself; rather, I’ve grown to love myself—harder even—and no longer see just the “flaws” but instead see the whole of me. And yes, I do like who like who I see in the mirror.
There are days when I can do the whole shebang: double cleanse, exfoliate, tone, treat, moisturize, protect, etc. But most of the time, I find that simple, hardworking products that do exactly as they claim to do are a godsend for busy, perennially sleep-deprived women such as myself. This is why I was quite happy with the latest skincare offering by popular and innovative beauty brand BYS.
Tried and Tested
Skin by BYS is a 10-piece collection with clear and straightforward offerings. Each product, housed in clear bottles and white stoppers and labels, is named aptly: the Extra Glow Brightening Serum contains vitamin C and papaya and lime extracts that target spots and charge the skin with protective antioxidants; the Extra Firming Youth Serum contains Skin by BYS’ Botaniceutical Plus-10, cranberry extract and peptide complex to stimulate collagen production. And so on. The range is paraben-free, hypoallergenic, cruelty-free and vegan.
It’s a great starter kit for those looking to take better of their skin, but it’s also a no-fuss, straightforward anti-aging range for those too busy to overthink their skincare routine. I was lucky enough to have tested some of the products before the launch. Here are the one that I immediately liked:
Skin by BYS Extra Hydrating Toner
Like many modern toners, this one doesn’t sting, but instead preps and infuses just-cleansed skin with hyaluronic acid to increase moisture and reduce redness, fine lines and wrinkles.
It’s a boon for dry and dehydrated skin, a common issue among 30-year-old skin, Also, unlike other toners, this one is weightless and absorbs immediately into the skin.
Skin by BYS Extra Effortless Pore Perfecting Sunblock
No thanks to this pandemic and lockdown, I find myself spending a lot of time outdoors—our garden and around our village for daily exercise. I’ve gone through many sun protection products and I immediately took a liking to this one. It’s lightweight and lightly moisturizing. It has natural matte finish (meaning it doesn’t look and feel tight on the skin).
After an hour of moderate exercise under the morning sun, I have a slight sheen that looks more glow-y than sweaty. More importantly, it offers broad spectrum SPF 50 PA+++, which you will need if you plan to use the next product:
Skin by BYS Brightening Serum
As mentioned earlier, this spot-erasing serum is great for those who want more radiant-looking, even-toned skin.
While it will take some time to really see the results, I’m already liking after just a few days of trying it out because it doesn’t irritate my skin and texture-wise, it’s easy to layer with other products. Even with our summertime humidity, it’s mighty comfortable.
Skin by BYS Extra Glow Face Cream
Hero ingredients include hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, and vitamin C—the trifecta for many bestselling skin-plumping products. Like most of the Skin by BYS products, this cream has a mild, pleasant scent that goes away quickly after application so sensitive noses won’t be bothered.
It also features a gel-cream consistency that absorbs quickly on the skin and doesn’t feel sticky or heavy afterwards, even when layered with a serum and the sunblock. It’s a great daily moisturizer that can work on a variety of skin types.
The Skin We’re In
It’s clear that a lot of thought went into creating Skin by BYS. It’s a bold move to release such straightforward products. It’s even bolder to call people to love themselves harder at a time when many people believe they have to put themselves last.
Just because I’m older, it doesn’t mean I can’t learn from the younger folks. I love the premium they put on loving themselves and prioritizing their well-being. It took me longer to get to that point, but now I’m glad I can love myself the way I ought to.
