Señorita 89 Paints Another Picture of the Pageant Scene

Señorita 89 features a pageantry-themed narrative with the fascination of a good thriller that Filipino viewers will surely can’t get enough of

Devotion is a word that we Filipinos know all too well. From our dedication to help others to our love for different cultural practices and traditions, we know how to appreciate passion when we see it and feel it. Such drive for anything is something that we’ll surely relate to in the newest series called Señorita 89

Crown fever

In the show, 32 women representing different cities and carrying their own aspirations and backgrounds vie for the Miss Mexico title. The three-month training period takes place in an abode called La Encantada. Literally translated as “the enchanted,” the house bears the secrets of the delegates and even members of the training organization.

The stories of every candidate unfold in each episode with a nonlinear manner, and seven out of eight episodes are named after the women involved in the competition. Created by writer, director, and producer Lucía Puenzo, Señorita 89 explores the different issues that women face in the society.

In the series, Elena (Ximena Romo) forms an internal struggle on how to help her fellow women trapped in the system of a sexist view. Meanwhile, Guerrero’s representative Dolores (Bárbara López) highlights a woman’s need to serve others, be it in the form of looking good or making people feel good. Finally, the story of Miss Chihuahua Jocelyn (Leidi Gutiérrez) shows how easily women can be exploited for their dire need to provide for their families.

What happens when ladies finally question their current societal places and assert their rightful positions in life? This is indeed the question that begs to be solved in the series.

Shared devotion

Along with sports, a beauty and brains stint is a big deal for countries like Mexico and definitely, the Philippines. This Mexican series rolls the appreciation of the said competition and good thriller stories into one compelling pageant context. Who else will appreciate this more than Filipinos can?

Both countries have a burning passion for pageantry evident on the rigorous training process that involves physical and mental endurance. As shown in the series, the girls underwent a makeover that involved a nitpicking of things to alter from their appearance to their movements. Much like our training for our representatives, the Mexican delegates should have a deep sense of understanding of the country’s culture and history. Different trainers are assigned to ensure that each woman is close to perfection.
