Apart from acting, Sam also is a gifted singer and musician, and he wants to go back into that too.

“I honestly just wanna get back into music. My management Cornerstone knows that very well. There was a time a few years ago when I had a gig, sobrang sablay; pumiyok ‘yung boses ko and pinacheck ‘yung throat ko. And I discovered that I had prenodules. Upon talking with a throat doctor, they concluded that I had pushed my voice, even in speaking as well as singing, which caused my vocal chords to become inflamed. And since, I’ve never really been able to get back my confidence in my voice. So, I kinda let that side go—but I miss it. Music’s been my first love. I miss playing guitar, I miss singing and just music in general,” Sam expresses.

Sam hasn’t made music in two years but he has collaborated musically with Catriona Gray, his girlfriend with a song she released during the pandemic. And yes, it was beautiful music they made together.

“The song I did with Cat was an acoustic version of a song that she had already previously released. But she was releasing a new version to fundraise. So ang ginawa namin for the video, I played guitar and she sang. It was nice to collaborate on this as our first project together, mas lalo na, it was for the Quality Education campaign for Young Focus during the pandemic.”

When we start talking about Catriona, Sam changes from shy star to super proud, supportive boyfriend.

“I’m actually really excited for her, because Cat’s releasing her first song as a songwriter. It’s gonna be released soon,” Sam teases. “She let me listen to the first ever draft, na recorded lang sa phone niya.”

I asked him if he gave her feedback as an artist or as her boyfriend. And he answers candidly. “I would say more as an artist. I know that she’s an artist and she has her own vision but most of the time she just needs guidance and affirmation. So I’m that for her.”
