Runway Review: Noel Crisostomo For MEGA Fashion Week Holiday 2019

Bringing us back to the swinging 60s, Noel Crisostomo creates a stunning, ultra-femme Holiday 2019 collection for MEGA Fashion Week.

While one could probably argue that the youth had its own idiosyncratic style before the sixties, it is still during this decade wherein the influence of the late 50s became mainstream. And as the younger generation had different views on politics, morals, and lifestyles, the 60s were an era of rebellion. Thus, this prompted them to look for fashion that could signal this difference.

Noel Crisostomo’s runway show took place during the fashion heydays of the said decade, and took us all for a trip down memory lane with his collection—from the silhouettes, tailoring, to the colors.

When Noel Crisostomo was around the age of eight, he chanced upon a black and white portrait of a ruffled Cristobal Balenciaga cape. And eventually, he called the statuesque woman who wore it as Lou Lou. That’s why as he reminisced the 60s, he also looked back at one of the first few influential pieces that led him to where he is now. For this collection, Lou Lou was the heart of Noel’s couture pieces.

Once Rufus Wainwright’s Supermayer Lost in Tiergarten played, the lovely music that beautifully complemented his collection, immediately washed us over with sweet nostalgia. Starting with draped tops teamed with green floral jacquard trousers, what followed were jacquard dresses in A-line silhouettes—60s new silhouette that ushered in a new beauty ideal compared to the hourglass.

“For this collection, I did a lot of signature prints that I designed myself. Then old couture with a lot of appliqués, embroideries, and beadwork. But I still gave it a modern touch,” Noel explained backstage. True enough, keeping up with the brilliant attention to even the minute details, the prints that teemed that runway was all evocative of his aesthetic—feminine and soft.

According to Noel, “The women that I design for, have done a lot of great things for themselves. They’re women who are successful, so a lot of my garments are well-crafted and well-tailored, but at the same time, I always want it to juxtapose with soft and feminine pieces and draping.”

As the show progressed, the designer showcased his real talent and prowess in breathing life to couture pieces in different volumes, shapes, and strong yet classic silhouettes—from pleated flowy dresses, tailored suits, to silk tafetta gowns, all in dainty colors. But the best part of his show must have been his final piece, a hippy chic magenta sheer dress wherein his muse’s heart-printed undergarment can be seen. Now that’s a cheeky statement only a confident Noel Crisostomo can pull-off.
