RUNWAY REPORT: Edgar Buyan at the Manila Fashion Fest 2018

By

For his Manila Fashion Fest 2018 runway, Edgar Buyan professed patriotic love for our rich local culture. Buyan masterfully showed his modern take on Filipiniana by showcasing iconic Filipino prints all throughout his collection: gorgeous lady farmers in traditional baro’t saya are plastered on tailored trousers while couples reminiscent of Higantes are printed on dresses and blazers.

With a decidedly dapper approach to tailoring, Buyan presents a collection that is both modern yet nostalgic—traditional barongs are reconstructed into bomber jackets while dainty blouses with pussy bows are juxtaposed with embroidered tiered skirts. Contemporary elements like bow accents and cropped trousers are unexpectedly grounded with vintage touches of top hats and band jackets. The result of which is refreshing and timely; exciting yet reverent.
