Fashion designer James Reyes, known for his whimsical works and theatrical concepts, passed away at age 48 due to heart failure.
James Reyes always pushed to innovate, and this is most evident in his work as a designer. Never one to follow the norm, James pushed the envelope with his play on fabric and silhouettes.
The designer transitioned from a career in advertising to fashion, moreover, James also created costumes for theatre. It’s as if he found his natural calling with design, catching the eyes of fashion savants and clients alike.
James’ design aesthetic draws heavily from our rich Filipino heritage, grounding his works with a nationalistic flavor. His runway designs were always something to look forward to, what with its intricate play on volume and texture. All of these gave James a signature edge—his knack for grandiose theatrical drama.
James Reyes founded and became president of the Young Designers Group and also served as secretary for the Fashion Design Council of the Philippines. He also took on the role of Creative Director for Bergamo, with a debut collection for the bespoke menswear tailoring brand late last year.
For our 23rd anniversary, James Reyes joined us and 16 other MEGA YDC designers for a night to remember. Rajo Laurel, Veejay Floresca, Mich Dulce, Renan Pacson, and Puey Quinones, among others, all created a spectacular show together.
