If there was #Brexit, it looks like the royal family has more to be concerned with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s so-called #Megxit.
Now here’s a royal drama that could make for a very interesting plot arc for a future season of The Crown: Prince Harry and Meghan Markle just announced that they “intend to step back” as senior members of Britain’s royal family. In their announcement, they explained that they are planning to work so as to become financially independent while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen. But wait, what does this all mean?
In a statement posted by the royal couple via their official Instagram account: “We now plan to balance our time between the United Kingdom and North America, continuing to honor our duty to The Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages.”
By doing so, the duke and duchess believe that having such geographical balance will be beneficial for their son, Archie. He will “be raised with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity.”
While the royal couple takes great pride in their work, especially with their charitable endeavors, they value the ability to earn a professional income in which the current monarchy’s structure prohibits them. Hence, they finally took the leap of fate to step down, and focus on the well-being of their own family.
In fact, they shared that their radical move was inspired by the public. As mentioned, “it is with your encouragement, particularly over the last few years, that we feel prepared to make this adjustment.”
This decision wasn’t definitely easy for Prince Harry and Meghan, but their Royal Highnesses feel this new approach is advantageous for the monarchy, given the changing times. “After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year is starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution,” the statement read.
Although this may be, the Buckingham Palace responded by saying, “discussions with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are at an early stage. We understand their desire to take a different approach, but these are complicated issues that will take time to work through.”
With that in mind, there is said to be a mood of grave disappointment from the palace, and other senior members as it allegedly look like they have not been consulted, according to some reports. However, this could also indicate that Prince Harry and Meghan will now have the private life they’ve always wanted.
Following recent visits, the couple is speculated to move to Canada. There seems to be no shortage of royal drama, it seems. And in this latest chapter, it does appear to be a significant shift in the history of the monarchy. Needless to say, as this story develops, we are highly invested.
