The dark comedy series made a case for rouge, burgundy, and plum lipsticks

Lipsticks are inarguably the most transformative and defining beauty asset in any show. A swipe of the right shade goes beyond completing the look. Instead, it completes a character. It’s a code that perfectly resonates with the beauty direction of Netflix’s dark comedy series, Wednesday. Aside from the plot and the casting, lip colors made their own moments on screen.

The show ushered in the soft goth glam category with a new take on rouge, burgundy, and plum defining each character. As luck would have it, beauty expert Cat Quinn took to Instagram to share the exact lip products that are used in the series. Hair and makeup designer Tara Mcdonald also provided MEGA exclusive beauty info regarding shades that are used on Christina Ricci and Emma Myers.

Wednesday Addams

Plum lips are back and are here to stay. In a beauty chat conducted by Cat Quinn, she revealed that Tara Mcdonald used a combination of MAC Lip Pencil in Nightmoth and Dr. Pawpaw Original Balm. Another notable detail includes the technique the artist used to achieve the softly blurred finish. Here, she mixed both products in a pot and lightly dabbed them on the actress for the color to naturally render on her lips.

Morticia Addams

“Traditionally, Morticia is known for having a crimson red lip, but makeup designer Tara Mcdonald and [director] Tim Burton wanted to make it more contemporary,” Cat Quinn noted in her video. The beauty expert nodded to the character’s shift from Anjelica Houston’s beauty signature to Catherine Zeta-Jones’ makeup palette of browns, blacks, and burgundy. As for the lips, Quinn revealed that the artist used Tom Ford in Bruised Balm.

Principal Weems

Gwendoline Christie’s beauty is hard to miss. In a video, Cat Quinn unveiled that Tim Burton and Tara Mcdonald modeled her look after Hitchcock heroines. “They did classic 1950s makeup—the strong brows, and a classic red lip,” she mentioned. “[The team] powdered her skin for a porcelain finish and wet-set her Italian wig every single night to make sure that it looked fresh and perfect.” The artist also unveiled that Christie’s punchy red lip is an oscillation between Code 8’s Matte Velour Lipstick in Opera and Lisa Eldridge’s True Velvet Lipstick in Velvet Ribbon.

Laurel Gates

Nude shades perfectly fit anyone—including villains. In an exclusive MEGA interview, the makeup artist shared that she used Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution and Lip Liner Pencil in Pillow Talk on Christina Ricci’s lips. It’s a lip product that also earned a cult-favorite status with fans like Emma Roberts, Nicole Kidman, and Billie Eilish.

Enid Sinclair

Enid Sinclair is inarguably one of the most loved characters in the show. True to her playful personality, Tara shared that they often change her lip color in every episode. “We used various colored lip glosses,” she added. “Lancôme Juicy tubes, MAC Powerglass Plumping Lipgloss, and Glossier Lip Gloss.”
