NAIA, The Sassy Youngster Of Drag Den, Is Ready For Take Off

Mga ginang at ginoo, maligayang pagdating sa NAIA.

The NAIA experience aims to spread joy. She is a gift from the drag goddesses wrapped in a chic, edgy, and gorgeous package. “Drag is very cathartic for me. I think my younger self would be happy to see me now, wearing heels for a living,” she says. Her stage presence is electric and, as long as you allow it, sends your whole body into a state of turbulence. No seatbelts allowed. Just have a great time.

What makes the art of drag special?

“I think it’s because of the transformative aspect of the art form. There is so much that goes into a drag look, such as the padding, makeup, and wigs, that we forget the internal transformation that comes along with it. I can only speak for myself, but for me, the look is complete once the lashes are on. I feel more confident and ready to slay the stage!”

How has your drag journey been so far?

“Like a plane ride, it’s been very turbulent and fast-paced. I’ve only been doing drag for about three years now, but I’ve already had massive growth since I started. I also have a wonderful following who call themselves “Terminals”! Sobrang saya lang na finally, after the lockdown era of the pandemic (which I spent most of my drag career in so far), NAIA’s finally spreading her wings!”

What are you most proud of in your career?

“I’m very proud about using my platform as a drag artist to fight disinformation in the country. Drag is very political on its own, but I’m happy that NAIA has her values that she keeps close to heart. Keeps her grounded in reality. Hindi lang puro fantasy ‘no, we’re in the Philippines, my god! Ang hirap kung wala kang pinaninindigan. NAIA is very outspoken.”

What / who inspires you? What have you learned from it / them?

“I’m truly inspired by the other local artists I surround myself with. My boyfriend Miyamoto Shin introduced me to the Philippine art scene and I’ve made worthwhile friends who are also inspired by NAIA. We collaborate using whatever skills we can bring to the table, and I’m so excited to reveal our collaborations as Drag Den airs!”

Drag Den premieres on December 8, 2022 via Prime Video.
