When a worldwide pandemic shutters many businesses, big or small, many scramble for a way out while a determined few set out for solutions. Taking the correct course of action is now even more crucial, so it’s no wonder that many turn to leaders such as Mike Lagman, leaders who believe that true success lies within one’s people.

The co-owner of MC Geometric Proportions Inc., alongside his wife Charmaine, doesn’t just deal with deadlines, budgets, and operations, but also with the safety of an entire workforce. The latter was magnified during the pandemic. “Every role is important in building. This is war and just like in war, we all die on the battlefield together or we all survive and come home victoriously to our families,” declares Lagman.

The scale of Lagman’s liberal thinking won’t come as a surprise to anyone who has followed his career or knows him personally. Even from the outset, he’s known to make meaningful relationships that stand just as strong as the actual structures he’s built. Always fully crediting the team that stands by him, Lagman is reshaping the “new normal” where he envisions the country and its many businesses recovering from the crisis and establishing a safer and more effective construction industry. “It’s about time to give back to people who are with you–that’s the dynamism of this company,” he states with complete certainty.

FORGING A NEW PATH

Moving forward from their three-month closure at the start of the pandemic, Lagman’s construction business is facing a boost thanks to the new demands. “We were so happy living in a shoebox–living in the city, and we pay so much premium for that, but it’s also nice to grow vertically,” he says.

Due to society’s renewed appreciation for open spaces, new construction opportunities have risen outside the metro. “Business-wise, being decentralized also means demand, even outside the core locations,” he explains. As they adopt sustainable solutions and leverage digital technology, they are also ensuring that no employee falls in the skill trade gap by re-skilling their workforce and maintaining an open line of communication.

“The constant communication that we have with our coworkers has always been there, but we make sure that they’re all technologically equipped with both the knowledge and gadgets needed,” he explains. Even when he and his wife are on the other side of the world, they are still hands on with all their projects. “We still make it a point that we check on every single detail; use our iPads, cell phones, and cameras, to be able to walk through our projects at any time, even if we have a time difference here,” he adds.

Another unique trait to Lagman is his ability to look ahead with radical candor, valuingquality over quantity, saying, “There’s plenty of work to do, but if I’m not able to deliver then I would not grab more than what I can handle. We make it a point that we still have the same integrity that we had in the former normal.”
