How the DLSU Spikers are making an impact in and out of the court and why they are one of this year’s New PH awardees

Coach Ramil de Jesus leads the 11-time UAAP champions, De La Salle University’s volleyball team aptly named Lady Spikers. His pursuit in seeking out the most passionate athletes is the proof they deserve this year’s New PH award for Sports for their hard work and success, in and out of the court.

A strict, don’t-mess-with-him disciplinarian, Coach Ramil de Jesus has since settled into the guise of a mentor, practically being a father of sorts to a rotation of now volleyball superstars that have toiled their time at his training court. Aside from making sure his players excel in the sport, he also guarantees that his approach to mentoring goes beyond athletics and well into the outside world. “Isa sa advocacy ko ‘yung makita ko ‘yung players na nag-e-excel sa academics and athletics. Hindi ko tinatapos ‘yung level ng athletics sa collegiate level lang. Gusto ko, kahit saan man sila makarating, pang-international ‘yung tina-target kong level,” Coach Ramil expresses that for all his intentions, it comes from a very good and perhaps unexpected place.
