Louis Vuitton’s Cruise 2023 Collection provides a hopeful and scintillating approach to dressing for the future.

Just before the sun begins to set over the Californian coast, Nicolas Ghesquière unveiled Louis Vuitton’s Cruise 2023 Collection at Salk Institute by Louis Kahn. This is the first-ever fashion show held at the architectural landmark and it was specifically chosen by Ghesquire so he can create a collection where the landscape can play an active part in the evolution of the wardrobe.
Paying homage the women of the future, models walked down to the open-air central courtyard of the Salk Institute wearing sharp, boxy silhouettes and metallic biker jackets, harem pants, and boots. Viewers were instantly mesmerized by how the looks glimmered under the sun’s glowing light and mimicked the brutalist design of the buildings.
“The Salk Institute has been a place of wonder for me over the years and Louis Kahn’s stunning Brutalist architecture against this extraordinary setting of the Pacific Ocean and the California sunset provides me with endless inspiration. It also celebrates intelligence, knowledge and the belief in the power of science,” Ghesquière shares.
The collection also included hybrid lavish drapings, hoods, and sarong-style skirts that can be removed with snap-hook systems, giving the collection a post-apocalyptic, Dune-inspired feel. This was the same case for the footwear, with each pair being part desert boot, part sneaker, and part mules. The artistic director shares that the line’s heat nomadic aesthetics are a reminder of the current reality of global warming.
Two-time Olympic champion skier Eileen Gu also made her runway debut wearing a jacquard crop top and skirt set with a leather waist belt that hugged her form. And closing the show on a high note was a trio of enormous sculpted boleros, similar to shining armor that were draped in metallic fringe.
Even though the line was overflowing with exaggerated silhouettes and futuristic elements, each look remained grounded in reality. Nicolas Ghesquière was able to create pieces that are otherworldly but something a Louis Vuitton woman can truly wear. This only proves yet again, his mastery of connecting the past, present, and future
