And as Dior revealed their Summer 2023 Men’s Collection on the runway, we see a narrative of two personal histories that intertwines art and fashion. Recalling the House’s origin, Kim Jones finds similarities between the origin of Christian Dior and Impressionist painter, Duncan Grant. The passion for their homes, gardens and private environments play a large role in their creative ventures and their works. A juxtaposition of private interests and willingness to share to the public, it translates to pieces that are meaningful and priceless.
Like stories, the summer collection serves as a continuation of the conversation that started for winter. A narrative of a more glorious summer, utilitarian and gardening elements merge with stylish and luxurious angles by integrating a New Look facet and Duncan Grant’s artworks.
The effortless contemporary collection was inspired by the changing light and mutability of the natural environment. A gradient of Dior’s iconic grays, pinks and pastels with colors from gardening such as greens and blues. Though with a hint of well-bred rebellion, pieces are designed to bring the extravagant and practical, formal and informal together.
Silhouettes that bring contrast to certain ensembles play a big role in the hidden rebellion. Double-breasted tailored coats are paired with tailored shorts and reflective vests are layered with oversized trench coats. One of the defining pieces of the collection is the new Bar jackets made with semi-transparent silk organza to reveal the traditional masculine construction of the garments underneath. A beautiful construction that brings to light the private to the public.
As a tribute to Duncan Grant’s artistry, reflective tech fabrics are designed with the artist’s work, Lily Pond Screen (c.1913) while Grant’s sketches are translated to complex yet easeful hand knits.
More so, Kim Jones continues to stay true to the House’s fundamentals and creative direction as he ventures into a pool of endless possibilities fearlessly, leading Dior to a world of modern contemporary and timeless luxury.
