A lot of things have been keeping Kim Cruz on the grind. People think she’s just cruising around, taking pictures for the ‘Gram and going on beach trips, but she keeps on surprising us. The TV host, painter and content creator for lifestyle was the busiest in quarantine. Mentored by no less than the national artist Ben Cabrera and having taken up multiple art courses in notable institutions, Cruz was well prepared for her first solo show.

But Cruz doesn’t just do this for herself—she’s participated in auctions for the benefit of local artists. She’s also a volunteer for Pawssion Project, an organization dedicated to providing a safe sanctuary for rescued cats and dogs. Being independent for most of her life, Cruz understands well how fortunate it is that she’s able to do what she loves everyday. “The initial concept for my first show was supposed to be different basketball players ‘cause I love basketball,” she says. “But Tito Ben made me realize that women are living art forms.” Hence, her first show entitled “Figure Study.” Cruz acknowledges that she’s still a work in progress, undeniably admitting that she’s eager to master her craft. Meanwhile, consider us ardent fans who can’t wait to see what’s next for the rising artist’s future.

STYLE TALKS

DESCRIBE A REGULAR DAY IN YOUR LIFE. WHAT KEEPS YOU BUSY?

I’m very grateful to be doing something that I love everyday. My days are usually spent doing research on art, painting, working at an art gallery then spending some time at home in my own space. I love indulging myself with simple things that make me happy like reading and just watching films.

WHAT HAVE BEEN THE HIGHLIGHTS OF YOUR YEAR SO FAR?

Having my first exhibit and having my own art studio would be my favorite ones. Meeting my mentors as well. It’s been a pretty good year so far.

PART FROM FASHION, WHAT FIELDS OR ACTIVITIES INTEREST YOU?

I really enjoy reading, some sports like chess and tennis. I love watching sports as well—I’m a big basketball fan.

DESCRIBE YOUR AESTHETIC! WHAT IS YOUR STYLE PHILOSOPHY?

I’d say my style is very laidback. I wear a lot of comfortable pieces like jeans and pants. I prefer wearing sneakers as well. I would say minimalist too since I dress up in very simple pieces and just put them all together.

ARE YOU A PLANNER OR A SPUR-OF-THE-MOMENT DRESSER?

I’m definitely a spur-of-the-moment dresser. I usually stress about what to wear and just rummage through my closet. I should probably start planning my outfits more often though.

DO YOU HAVE ANY STYLE ICONS WHOM YOU LOOK UP TO?

I really like the style of Jennie Kim and Rihanna. I’m a big fan of them both and I often look through their outfits for inspiration.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST FASHION INVESTMENT?

My Pigalle Louboutins would be my first investment. It’s a classic and can be worn with literally anything. I’ve been using it for years and I never get sick of it.

PICK YOUR POISON: BAGS OR SHOES?

SHOES!

WHO ARE YOUR FAVORITE DESIGNERS OR BRANDS LOCALLY OR ABROAD? WHY DO YOU LIKE THESE IN PARTICULAR?

My favorites would be Rhude, Dior, Amiri and Hervé Léger.

I’m big on streetwear pieces and I really look up to the designers of these brands because of how innovative they are and how they’re able to incorporate luxury with streetwear. I love the fit of the Hervé pieces too.

QUICK, YOUR CLOSET’S ON FIRE! WHAT ARE THE FIRST THREE THINGS YOU WOULD SAVE?

1. My Louis Vuitton Speedy – the first bag I’ve ever received from my mom

2. My Dior B23 Lows

3. My Jordan 1 Obsidians – it’s one of my faaaavorite shoes ever

TELL US ABOUT YOUR CURRENT OBSESSION.

Been so obsessed with wearing corsets lately. I just love body- hugging pieces there’s something empowering about it for me.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR KIM CRUZ?

Been busy with my upcoming exhibit and after that, I plan on traveling a bit to rest and relax then back to working and improving my craft. I’m excited to keep working on myself and my passions and it’s very exciting to start on this new path.
