In January 2023, Tom Bachik captured the attention of beauty fans with his latest work for Jennifer Lopez. The actress was seen donning an almond-shaped nail dressed in a flattering nude shade. The standout detail? The manicure’s glossy and high-shine finish. It was the celebrity nail artist who coined the term “lip gloss nails” to describe the look. And from there, it became the beauty sphere’s newest nail design obsession.
Lip gloss nails are considered the little sister of the glazed donut nails. A twist to its preceding iteration, the nail design renders a glassy and high-shine finish that is quite comparable to a wet-look surface. It is often accompanied by a lick of a light, soft, and sheer coat of nail polish, and is grounded by a blush, white, or nude palette. It’s the perfect choice for any minimalist who wants to make a subtle statement.
Achieving the look
As luck would have it, the celebrity nail artist unveiled the process of achieving the nail look. “Prep is key to a longer-lasting manicure!” Tom Bachik wrote in a social media caption. “I started first by giving Jen a meticulous mani with my Tom Bachik Ultimate Nail Care Set by Tweezer Man.” The nail artist then proceeded by applying his most-trusted polish formula. “I applied the Apres Nail GelX Maisie tips in a natural medium stiletto and softened the shape a bit.”
Of course, the short tutorial wouldn’t be complete without unveiling his secret behind the high-shine finish. “I custom-mixed the perfect lip gloss color just for Mrs. Affleck. A semi-sheer high gloss nude playing off her skin tone.” And to complete the look, Tom Bachik personalized the design by incorporating a reflective gel glitter lining.
