The opening ceremony of the much-awaited Tokyo Olympics was a night to remember with its many iconic moments. From the 1800 drones that formed into a shape of a globe to Naomi Osaka lighting the torch. For the International Olympic Committee President, Thomas Bach, the Tokyo Olympics is a moment of hope, despite being delayed for a year due to the pandemic. The array of colors displayed in the fashion picks of the Olympic delegates in the Parade of Nations was a testament to that.
The opening ceremony has always been a portion of the Olympics that people look forward to as all the nations who will compete were seen rallying together in one stadium, showcasing their national costume-inspired looks to custom-made outfits by famous designers like Ralph Lauren and Giorgio Armani as their symbol of pride. In case you missed it, here are some of the best fashion moments in Tokyo Olympics’ opening ceremony, from scene stealers to the more casual ones you can easily cop.
Kenya
Making one of the most colorful entrances, Kenya’s female athletes wore Maasai print dresses under a red caped bolero jackets while the male athletes wore matching shirts with black trousers.
USA
Ralph Lauren has once again returned as the official designer for Team USA’s Olympic uniforms. The preppy look was comprised of a navy blazer and trousers, a striped short-sleeved shirt and custom face mask.
Colombia
The Colombian team mixed their own culture with Japan’s for their opening ceremony look. Their version of the kimono has red, blue and yellow stripes which are a reminiscent of the Colombian flag.
Italy
The Italian Olympic team went for a patriotic look with their Giorgio Armani–designed tracksuits. The symbol of Japan, Land of the Rising Sun, is reinterpreted in the colors of the Italian flag.
Angola
From the flag bearer, Natália Bernardo’s gold skirt, the butterfly-shoulder dresses of the female athletes to the colorful, long sleeved tops of the men of the team, Angola made a striking entrance.
France
This look may fall on the more casual side, but don’t you want to have Team France’s Lacoste long “raincoats” for our rainy season?
Bahrain
Team Bahrain looking like true royalties with their national costume inspired looks.
Greece
Team Greece looking chic, especially the women delegates with their pleated skirts.
