OMEGA and Nekton team up through the OMEGA Seamaster Diver 300M Nekton Edition: a dive watch on a mission to save the seas
The depths of the world’s oceans have long mystified our imaginations to the point that it has become a subject of fear. From mainstream media to popular literature, the ocean deep has been described as dark, treacherous, and teeming with danger. It’s an innate feeling for us on the surface–we fear what we don’t know. But one word often escapes us when describing the vast waters: home.
Once thought to be devoid of life, the oceans are home to millions of Earth’s living creatures—from vital single-celled organisms to the planet’s largest living animal. And just like every home, it must be cared for, especially given how high production rates in consumer goods equate to high waste production. In fact, over 8 million metric tons of plastic trash enters seas every year. Discarded fishing nets continue to lethally snare marine life, and unregulated ship waste gets dumped into the waters with every travel. That’s why it’s disheartening to learn that only 8% of the ocean is in any kind of designated marine protected area.
Looking to shift this number is Nekton, a not-for-profit research foundation committed to accelerate the scientific exploration and protection of the ocean. Their goal is clear: to have 30% the world’s oceans protected by 2030. Onboard this voyage to make time for the planet is OMEGA, a brand with an undisputed connection to the waters. In line with this pledge, OMEGA introduces the Seamaster Diver 300M Nekton Edition: a dive watch on a mission to save the seas.
The famous Seamaster has played a key role in OMEGA’s ocean story since its debut in 1948. The Seamaster has constantly reminded us of the ocean’s beauty, clarity, and long-lasting condition–the same characteristics OMEGA and Nekton aim to instill in today’s waters.
The Nekton Edition comes in two models. One features an integrated black rubber strap, and another with a stainless steel bracelet to give the Diver a dressier look. Both iterations, however, feature a polished-brushed stainless steel case and laser ablated black ceramic [ZrO2] dial, matte-finished with polished waves. Surrounding the dial is a unidirectional rotating bezel in grade 5 titanium, and features a laser ablated diving scale.
Driving this OMEGA Seamaster Diver 300M Nekton Edition is the Master Chronometer Calibre 8806, featuring a self-winding movement with a co-axial escapement, finished off with a rhodium plating and Geneva waves in arabesque. Certified by METAS, it can resist magnetic fields of 15,000 gauss.
As a tribute to the hard-working foundation, the oriented caseback features the watch’s water resistance and an embossed Nekton submarine medallion. This research submarine, aptly named the Seamaster 2, carries on the legacy of yachtsman Sir Peter Blake, an advocate of ocean conservation through his expedition yacht, the Seamaster.
“As a pioneering brand with a long history of pushing at the boundaries of what is possible, we have the utmost respect for this bold, confident vision and we’re thrilled to help make the goal a reality,” says OMEGA’s President and CEO Mr. Raynald Aeschlimann. Vital work is already underway with missions resuming next year at the Indian Ocean. Through this partnership, the OMEGA Seamaster Diver 300M Nekton Edition hopes to instill one fact: that having a healthy planet is dependent on keeping a healthy ocean.
