Kim Jones pays tribute to Yves Saint Laurent in his FW23 Menswear collection

It is no secret that the way style and trends circulate is through history and innovation. Designers would often derive their inspiration from moments of the past or a piece preserved through time, which then would be transformed into a clothing of modernity. This cycle has proved to be effective as fashion enthusiasts grab yesterday’s big trend, and interpret it with their own unique style. It’s a sequence all too familiar, and Dior is no stranger to it either.

“The cycle of a fashion house is about regeneration and rejuvenation, just like the cycle of fashion itself.”

Kim Jones

Codes of the youngest couturier and the current creative director of the House merge, creating a dynamic that plays with feminism and masculine elements. For their Menswear collection, Kim Jones goes back to the start of Yves Saint Laurent’s reign after the passing of Monsieur Dior.

Modern utility

Kim Jones’ affinity towards utilitarian outerwear is quite known in the industry, but he softens the features by using contemporary elements such as neutral hues and minimal detailing, which makes it more savoir-faire.

Coat jackets

A combination of structure and comfort, the collection plays with juxtaposed ideas such as traditional tailoring and deconstruction. Kim Jones executed this idea through maintaining the structure of the coat, yet finished with a laid back form and cuffs we see on jackets.

Open sleeves

The playful detail is actually a direct tribute to Yves Saint Laurent, a design that was taken from his archives. Kim Jones translated the specific detail in various ways, like the shoulder-baring jacket and zipped open sleeves.

Short sleeve cuts

Layering has been a favorite way of styling these past few years, and Kim Jones went for an effortless direction with his short sleeve pieces. While the construction was kept simple with minimal details, it was the materials that truly elevated the look.

Peak the prints

Another tribute to the late designer, Kim Jones added hints of prints in the collection, specifically leopard in this case—a detail Yves Saint Laurent loved to add in his own work.
