Debunking the misconceptions about the world of gaming, Christine Samson shares the best thing about pursuing your passion

Let’s all admit it—there was one point in our lives that our parents scolded us because we were playing video games all the time. While we understand their intentions of making sure we set our priorities straight, it is unfortunate that they have a false impression that playing games will not lead to anywhere.

However, the times have changed as a new world of tech is rising molding what was just a hobby before actually turned into a real career. In fact, wherever you look, it seems like gaming has been in the news more often nowadays. So, for a culture that has long been criticized, it feels good to finally see gaming being introduced more to the public at large. And not only that, but we’re also witnessing more female presence in this male-dominated industry such as Tier One’s Christine Samson.

According to the young gamer, “Earning a living out of a hobby will always have its own hindrances. But so is anything that involves pursuing your passion. In my opinion, the financial aspect of gaming—or any “passion project” for that matter—will only probably be secondary to its emotional benefits.”

“At the end of the day, it’s just a matter of how much work you put in it. I am a firm believer that you can be successful in anything you pour your heart into,” she adds. “Times are changing for this industry. As the industry grows bigger, so will the opportunities.”

Passion With a Purpose

Discovering our passions would just come out naturally in us. As we surf for possibilities growing up, we slowly and surely realize how we can reach our full potential in life. And much like anybody else, Christine Samson didn’t take much of a long time before she knew she was meant for gaming.

“I guess everyone naman played a game at one point in their lives—be it sa cellphone, or sa arcades,” she recalls. “All I know is that one day, I realized how fascinating it is to be really able to make your hobbies or the things that you enjoy during your past time be a career to pursue full-on.”

Now, they say that when you choose your passion as your career path, you’ll never have to work a day in your life. While that is indeed true, it’s easy to get disheartened during the first few months of trying to establish yourself in a new professional space. So, it’s critical to have people who inspire you and who’ll support you all the way—no matter what hurdle you can encounter.

“A lot of people inspired me to be in this field,” she details. “I have to say meeting ate Alodia Gosiengfiao changed the game for me and has strengthened my desire to pursue gaming even more. She didn’t only inspire and encourage me, but also mentored me in a lot of things in more ways than one—whether it be about gaming or life in general, it’s nice to know that I can always rely on someone like her.”

Just Go For It

The pandemic has undoubtedly taken a toll on many people’s lives. It has altered our lifestyle in more ways than we could’ve ever imagined. No longer can we freely roam around the city, especially the world, because we’re stuck in the four corners of our homes.

But while we’re in quarantine, there was one aspect that helped us cope living in the midst of a global health crisis. Gaming has served to be our mode of escape. And apart from giving us the joy we need, it’s also free for all, hence, making the entire world a big community where we could connect and have fun.

As a matter of fact, Christine Samson shared that the best thing that has ever happened in her life since she started streaming is being able to connect with a lot of people she hardly knew and vice versa. “I just think that there is magic in communicating to people online while streaming that no other field that I know of could deliver,” she optimistically claims.

The thing about gaming is that it is open for all and wide enough for you to choose your own path. Whether you game as a hobby or a passion that you want to turn into something more, the possibilities are endless especially if you have SMART and the Giga Games as your companion to staying closer to these passions—minus the lag of course. With these power ups, the barriers are finally down for all Filipinos to enjoy the transformative power of gaming.

And that’s why Christine says that “it’s truly a one of a kind type of experience” to the extent that she “can’t wait to even meet more people in the future!” and explore games that allow her to fully embrace this passion turned career. So, the common misnomer about gaming won’t do anyone good is now an argument that is no longer valid. Because if you just pour out all of your talents, your skills, and most importantly your grit, pursuing your passion could just be the best thing that has happened in your life. After all, there’s only one thing that Christine Samson told herself way back up to this day: “Just go for it.”
