Major Celebrity Breakups That Rocked Our World in 2021

By

Is 2021 really the year of breakups and heartbreak? Here’s some of the most major celebrity breakups of 2021 that seemed to have broken our own hearts as well.

Last December 2020, a Facebook post that focused on the expected outcomes of dubbed Feng Shui Master, Marites Allen, for the year 2021, garnered the attention of Filipino netizens. While she laid out various possible events, what struck readers the most was her warning that the upcoming year would turn out to be the “year of breakups and heartbreak.” She also added that the cause for these broken relationships will stem from “a lot of misunderstanding and miscommunication.”

The post initially drew flak and snide remarks such as, “Isn’t it always the year of breakups?” Some instead chose to respond with neutrality and have figured that it’s better to wait and see.

Fast forward to today, the same post is drawing notice again but the tone of people has changed. Many are actually starting to believe that there was a hint of truth to the claim. Amongst those revisiting the post, there are those who are the actual heartbroken; while others share that their belief comes from their observation of the string of major celebrity breakups that have transpired this year.

With all the buzz recently revolving around famous people, both international and local, and their broken relationships, the claim that this is the year of heartbreak doesn’t seem as slim anymore.

In a masochistic way of reliving the pain experienced from these splits, we’ve made a round-up of some of the most major celebrity breakups in the year 2021, so far. We say “so far” but honestly, we’re hoping that there be no more additions to the already lengthy list—especially with only two days before the year ends!

Note: these are arranged by the month the events transpired.

Kim Kardashian and Ye

Kimye’s romance was one that was speculated to have bloomed way before the two publicly disclosed their relationship in 2012. Come February this year though, news outlets were abuzz with the announcement of Kim filing an amicable divorce from Ye. Considered as one the most major celebrity breakups of the 2021, the world of social media was frankly rocked with the severance of one of Hollywood’s hottest and most powerful couples. This was after nearly 7 years of marriage and having 4 kids together.

Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez

With a total of 4 years, 2 spent in dating and the other half being engaged, the pair decided last April that they are actually better off as friends. Prior to the confirmation brought by their joint statement highlighting their split, many rumors were already swirling around about their separation.

Kylie Padilla and Aljur Abrenica

Their romance was established in 2011. After which, they gave birth to their son, Alas, in 2017 and tied the knot shortly after. Marriage still on-going and strong, they welcomed another addition to their family, baby Axl Romeo. Already a perfect family of 4, the union was unfortunately broken apart. Chaos eventually unraveled in the wake of Kylie’s confirmation of the break-up in July 2021.

Even after parting, the two’s relationship seemed to remain in rocky waters. The cryptic messages, new partners and harsh exchanges aired out in social media have all resulted in muddying the waters even further—especially for fans.

The good news though, is that come November, the twists and turns in their story seemed to finally settle. Kylie, in her personal vlog in Youtube, assured her father, Robin Padilla, that Aljur and her are okay and better off as friends. Aljur also expressed in an interview with Jobert Sucaldito that he, too, wanted to remain in good terms with his ex-partner and that he holds dear memories from their relationship.

LJ Reyes and Paolo Contis

They were good friends and co-stars in GMA before entering an eventual partnership and raising kids together in 2015. However, their love affair which was viewed by fans as sweet and endearing, eventually turned sour after 6 years. After Paolo’s manager, Lolit Solis, revealed their separation, the ex-couple took their own path to announcing their split—LJ through an interview and Paolo through an apologetic and lengthy Instagram post.

Maggie Wilson and Victor Consunji

The Binibining Pilipinas World 2007 and triathlete-slash-real estate magnate formed their marriage in 2010. 2 years later, the two were blessed with their son, Conner. Fast forward to the end of September and 11 years since their union as husband and wife, they confirm their separation. Despite the painful and challenging decision, both decide to remain good partners, friends and parents for their child.

Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik

After 5 years of calling it on and off, the gorgeous couple who share one-year-old daughter Khai decided to split. This came after the strong allegations of Gigi’s mother, Yolanda, against Zayn. She accused him of physically harassing her and calling her profanities.

Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes

Continuing the string of cordial breakups, Camila and Shane decided to call it quits this November due to difficulties in matching schedules. During the 2020 lockdown, the exes were spotted many times enjoying each other’s company as both were off their usual heavy workloads. Even prior to the commencement of their love affair in 2019, the pair was known to be good friends. In their joint statement, they shared their sentiments to continue being exactly that—best friends. It’s safe to say that is one major celebrity breakup of 2021 that ended seemingly healthy.

Janine Gutierrez and Rayver Cruz

After 4 years of keeping a relatively lowkey relationship, the ex-pairs headed straight to splitsville. While the two have not yet released any official statements regarding the matter, a source close to the couple has confirmed that there is no third party involved and that the two may have possibly gotten estranged because of not seeing each other as often.

Alodia Gosiengfiao and Wil Dasovich

Moving backward, the cosplayer slash Esports co-founder of Tier One and vlogger announced their romance in early 2018 after the latter was declared cancer-free. In November though, Alodia, out of the desire to be sincere, came forward with the news that they are no longer together. She shared that outside the seemingly picture-perfect relationship seen in their vlogs, there were actually a lot of breaks between them before making the big decision to throw in the towel and separate ways.
