To cap off Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October, Fitflop launches a special BCAM exclusive footwear collection to join the fight against breast cancer.
Breast cancer, which mainly affects women, accounts for 16% of overall cancer cases in the Philippines, and about 30% of cancer cases among women. Doctors estimate that three out of 100 Filipino women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime.
While findings on the causes of breast cancer remain inconclusive, doctors have identified certain risk factors such as being overweight, bearing no children by the age of 30, family history of breast cancer, excessive drinking of alcohol, and even having early menstruation and late menopause. But despite this grim scenario, a breast cancer diagnosis is not hopeless. “It isn’t the end of the world,” says survivor, Maritoni Fernandez. One of the most important factors that could increase a patient’s survival rate is early detection. Having regular check-ups, which could lead to the detection of early-stage cancer, improves relative survival by 27% to 47%.
FitFlop is partnering up with ICanServe Foundation, a breast cancer advocacy group in the Philippines, to roll out initiatives that will provide women with the necessary know-how and tools to fight breast cancer.
In line with the celebration of Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October, FitFlop has launched the Petal Ruffle collection, which comes in three silhouettes and colors, and is available in all FitFlop stores nationwide. Part of the proceeds will be donated to ICanServe Foundation.
FitFlop and ICanServe also offered a free Breast Cancer Awareness talk last October 24, which includes steps on how to conduct your own breast examination.
Don’t let the end of the month be the end of your fight to spread breast cancer awareness and other illnesses prone to women. Go on regular check-ups as often as you can to keep tabs on your health. After all, you’ve only got one life to live so make the most of it.
