As the lip look re-enters the beauty chat, the dark and moody hue proved that it can be as versatile as a classic rouge

The renaissance of burgundy lipsticks is inarguably the best beauty revelation of the year. Take the Spring/Summer 2023 runway for example—iterations of the dark hue accompanied works of prominent labels like Chanel, Versace, Luar, and The Row. Along with that is the lip look’s defining period in Tim Burton’s Netflix dark comedy series, Wednesday. Its popularity sent the shade back to the mainstream conversation and from there, it became the new cool.

A new take on a power shade, the moody lip is just as timeless as a classic rouge. It’s the perfect modern segue for the patrons of the ‘90s grunge category that renders the right statement and effortlessly captures attention. The shade also surprisingly flatters every skin tone, which makes it easy to play with warmer or cooler variations. It’s also versatile enough to complement any makeup format. Ahead, we explore ways to incorporate the lip look into any style.

A swipe of a rich burgundy shade easily rendered a vampire appeal to any style. Here, artist Patrick Ta kept the eye makeup dramatic with a series of smoky autumnal hues, while the coveted lip shade punctuated the overall look. It’s the perfect makeup format to complement a sultry mood. Incorporate the vampire lip method by outlining the lips with a darker plum liner and filling the rest with a lighter iteration. Clear gloss is optional, but a coat adds the right amount of attitude to the look.

Alexandra Daddario proved that burgundy lips are just as elegant as a classic rouge. A nod to the Old Hollywood beauty, eye makeup is kept minimal with a wash of metallic shimmer, while a swish of pink blush adds color to her cheeks. Elsewhere, details like her fully groomed eyebrows and naturally enhanced eyelashes complete her look, while her side-swept hairstyle encapsulates the allure of timeless glamour.

Minimal makeup allows the time-tested signature shade to stand out. Decoding the work of Polly Osmond to Lily Collins, she pared down the eye look by focusing on her eyebrows and eyelashes. It’s a combination that is quite synonymous with French beauty, making it the perfect choice for the Emily in Paris star. Make it more personal by opting for a lip product that is true to you.

BLACNKPINK’s Rosé’s entry shows that a soft wash of burgundy tint can be as transformative. To achieve the look, mix your trusted lip product with a balm at the back of your hands. Using a lip brush, gently dab the formula on the lips. Add a glazed twist to the look by opting for a glossed tint or applying another layer of balm.

It’s undeniable that burgundy sets off incredibly on the morena complexion. As seen on Vanessa Hudgens, the warm iteration of the lip shade is already enough to create a significant statement. A standout detail also includes the formulation’s non-drying matte finish that ties in the look together perfectly. And from there, we couldn’t help but wonder—are matte lipsticks officially back?
