All The Theories Surrounding BTS’ “Permission To Dance” Music Video

By

Just like every member of the BTS Army, we enjoyed every single moment of BTS’ “Permission To Dance” music video.

Just this morning, Korean boyband BTS premiered their newest music video for “Permission To Dance”—and the BTS Army are already breaking records. Just an hour after its release, the video has already reached 11 million views.

Co-written by Ed Sheeran, the song is the second single to be released from BTS’ Butter album. Aptly titled “Permission to Dance,” the song sends a message that you don’t need anyone’s permission to dance and be happy, and to always live your life the way you want to.

And while we will be streaming “Permission to Dance” non-stop, we can’t help but look for easter eggs and hidden meanings within the group’s new music video. We’ve rounded up all the theories surrounding BTS’ Permission To Dance music video:

Their Outfits

Dressed in cowboy outfits, BTS members Jungkook, Suga, V, Jimin, RM, J-Hope, and Jin once again captured the world’s hearts with their newest music video. While their western cowboy ensembles fit the desert, we can’t help but wonder why they would opt to dress that way, in comparison to their previous music videos where they wore suits and streetwear. Of course, the Army comes to our rescue with their theories. A Twitter user suggests that their outfits actually means “holding ones equanimity like a cow in the midst of the pandemic in memory of 2021 being the year of the cow.”

They also suggest that it’s connected to encouraging people to get vaccinated, “the word ‘vaccine’ comes from the Latin word ‘vacca’, meaning cow, where people all over the world have their hopes in for a return to normalcy.” For some, their outfits show their global domination, being at the top of the US charts since releasing Butter.

Purple Balloon

The music video begins with a woman looking out the window and seeing a purple balloon flying around. Yes, the color purple has been dominated by BTS and the BTS Army, but what does the purple balloon mean? BTS themselves actually revealed it in their music video teaser. At the beginning of the teaser, you will see Suga reading a newspaper, and the front page reads: “Purple Balloons Signal The End of Covid-19” and “2022 The Beginning of a New Era, Good Bye Covid-19”.

Choreography

It’s no surprise that BTS once again wowed us with their dance moves (as they do in every single music video and performance), but did you notice anything in their choreography? BTS included a special dance that’s made from sign language! They can be seen throughout the video doing this dance move. Other international sign languages like “Happy” and “Peace” were also seen. They included this so that the deaf will be able to understand the song, too.

Concept Photos

Before releasing “Permission To Dance,” BTS gave their fans a taste with some concept photos—and it comes in four sets. While most of us just look at the photos to admire the boys, some of the Army went ahead and analysed all of the photos. A Twitter user shared her theory, stating that the four sets of photos tells a story of how the past year has been. From staying home 24/7 to feeling imprisoned due to the lockdowns to finally seeing some light at the end of the tunnel with planning trips, to finally being free to travel after being stuck at home.
