Who is Hannah Locsin?

At this point, you’ve probably been seeing her name fire up your social media timelines, accompanied by what is now a perfunctory image of her in a lime green Gucci dress, punctuated of course by an oversized pair of chain-attached sunglasses and what is now a distinct bob cut. It shouldn’t seem anything out of the ordinary, especially with more and more Filipinos taking a crack and asserting dominance on the international fashion scenes. What makes this milestone more memorable is that it marks the first time a Filipina model was chosen to walk for the illustrious House of Gucci in Milan Fashion Week no less.

Starting off as a cryptic update on Instagram Stories, where she posted what appeared to be a standard pre-show look in the aforementioned sunnies that reflected an image of Creative Director Alessandro Michele, no less. What followed was the confirmation by way of the live stream and several fashion insiders picking up that she indeed walked for Gucci’s S/S 2020 show as Look #27. Trailed by an eruption of congratulatory messages and a swell of national pride, Hannah Locsin has no doubt shot up the fashion food chain, but behind that momentous walk down the runway of Gucci is a story of grit, tenacity, and hard work.

Some of you might just be getting acquainted with Miss Locsin, but she was already a working model back here in Manila, walking many a fashion and filling up her book with editorials from numerous publications. After dutifully finishing her degree and switching up her look with a shocking hair chop, she then started her trajectory abroad. This wasn’t an overnight success by any means, and here, we track down the reasons why she was already meant to slay the fashion capitals of the world—and perhaps even more.

Not too long ago, our on-the-rise star came back to Manila to walk the runway for the launch of Tresemmé’s Pro-Color Series. Blazing the red-bathed catwalk, in a segment orchestrated by Pam Quinones, it was clear how she was a cut above the rest, literally and figuratively. Sporting a deep shade of red on her hair, Hannah Locsin was definitely runway ready in her all-red look, which she also brought to life in the accompanying campaign. Now, isn’t she quite the fire starter?

While her updates are understandably far and in between on her Instagram page, Hannah Locsin recently posted her fashion spreads that came out on Cosmopolitan UK, which shows her donning 70s-inspired looks in cheerful shades, eccentric separates, and a take-no-prisoners game face.

Prior to her pride-inducing moment in Milan for Gucci, Hannah Locsin was part of the ensemble crew that breathed an eerie, yet visually striking life to the vision of photographer MJ Suayan in a fashion editorial featured on Vogue Italia. Almost unrecognizable, she completely transformed into this otherworldly being, lending a distinct air of effervescence and whimsy to an otherwise macabre narrative. Swathed in transparent fashion pieces, with slicks of black smeared on her face and edged with undone rows of braids, this could be seen as a turning point for her, making a case for her eventual pursuit of the European experience.

Speaking of a European pedigree on her now storied CV, Hannah Locsin’s precursor to Milan Fashion Week for Gucci were striking moments on the runway for Paris Fashion Week and London Fashion Week. A triumph for any Filipino model with earnest hopes of making it on the greater, grander stage of fashion, it was as if her path was already being lined up way before anyone could even imagine it to be a reality.

Hannah Locsin for Bershka

By now we know that commercial work is not only part and parcel of a model’s career, but it accounts for the good bulk of it, proving to be their bread and butter. With her chameleon-like abilities, transforming from one style visual to the next, Hannah Locsin is a perfect fit for commercial brands, where she has done work for brands such as Bershka.

Decorating her already sparkling and sterling crown with scoring a major show in Milan Fashion Week through Gucci, the stars definitely looking up for Hannah Locsin. Truly special in many ways, there must be a reason why Alessandro Michele cast her in his dawn of a new era chapter at the storied house of Gucci. As this is just the beginning, we honestly cannot wait what else she achieves in her career. Could a campaign be in the works? Well, your guess is just as good as ours.
