In June 2020, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle moved to Santa Barbara County from their Frogmore home in the Queen’s Windsor estates. This brought about a lot of questions, as well as rumors of the family stepping down from their duties. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have kept quiet about their move till earlier this year. In a span of two weeks, both parties have been able to turn the narrative around through their involvement with the press. In February 26, 2021, Prince Harry went on an afternoon interview with James Corden on The Late Late Show. He spoke about mental health, raising a family, and life at Kensington Palace. A week later, both the Duke and Duchess of Sussex went on air with Oprah to come clean about their experience as Royals.

There is so much that has been brought to light by the two about practices that have been going on for years. If you think about it, they’ve only continued what Princess Diana has been fighting against for most of her Royal life. The UK may be 7000 miles away from the Philippines, but there is so much we can still learn from what’s happening today. Here are the 7 things Filipinos can learn from Prince Harry, Meghan Markle, and Princess Diana’s experience as a Royal:

1.
Checking in on your mental health benefits those around you.

Mental health can still prove to be a challenging topic in the Philippines. There is a common misconception surrounding mental health that treatment is only beneficial to the patient. In contrary to this, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have shown us that aligning your mental health will most definitely benefit those around you.

2.
Conversations on skin color should not be overlooked.

The internet went under fire when Meghan Markle shared to Oprah about conversations regarding her baby’s skin color were brought up in the Palace. Whether it is a suggestion or a mere conversation, the color of one’s skin should never be an issue.

3.
Family comes first, always.

Despite her tremendously unhappy marriage with Prince Charles, Princess Diana did her best in keeping her family together until the very end. The Princess never left her children’s sides during the troubling times with the Royal Family.

4.
Celebrities (The Royals) are human, too.

Prince Harry needing to use the loo? Unheard of. Well, it happened. In the Philippines, idolization has been put in an extreme. Sometimes we tend to forget that celebrities we adore are humans too, so let’s treat them like it.

5.
There is fake news everywhere

Fact checking is essential. Nowadays, everyone is pretending to be a reputable news outlet. There are multiple back-handed stories about Meghan, Prince Harry, and Princess Diana. It is only now when we are learning about the truth.

6.
Taking a step back is not the same as giving up.

There is a big pressure on anyone with goals and ambitions to keep moving forward. If the pandemic has taught us anything, it’s that taking a step back is not the same as giving up. Both the Duke and Duchess of Sussex make this very clear in their interview.

7.
There is a difference between a projected image and progress

This might come off a little harsh, but we have to face the fact that the projection of progress is not the same as progress itself. We may not be living in the same time as Diana did, but have we really progressed since?
