From plaid, stripes, to houndstooth, we have witnessed several fashion houses who made a powerful case for heritage prints for Fall/Winter 2018. We had Versace painted the runway with colorful prints channeling the 80s, and featured tartan miniskirts and printed tights. Burberry’s Creative Director Christopher Bailey on the other hand took his final bow to the British label after 17 years, and created a rainbow version of the Burberry check.
With heritage prints undeniably becoming a classic staple that’s always going to be present on the runway (whether it’s dominating it or not), there will always be the challenge on how to elevate the look—adding an exquisite contemporary twist. I must admit that I never tried to mix and match checks with stripes or any print for that matter. I always wanted to be safe when it comes to prints. Perhaps the reason I chose heritage prints as my trend was because I wanted to challenge myself to go beyond the safe zone.
The trick to perfect the art of mixing and matching varying prints is that you need to flip the proportions—so if you have a bold striped button-down shirt, then opt for a subtle check trousers. Then choose a color palette, and subtly break up the look with solids. Just always keep in mind to keep your look unexpected and different. As Coco Chanel would say, “in order to be irreplaceable one must always be different.”
