From The Theme To Co-Hosts—Here’s Everything You Need To Know About The 2019 Met Gala

By

From the event’s theme to its co-hosts, details on the 2019 Met Gala has finally been released. Needless to say, the 2018 Met Gala almost literally became the heavens of some sorts. With Anna Wintour on the lead (since 1995), this annual event has been a spectacle everyone looks forward to. With its goal to raise funds for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, we will once again see celebrities walk up the steps of the historic New York landmark. Here is everything we know so far about next year’s Met.

Styles, Gaga, & Williams

Met Gala 2019

Last year’s gala was co-hosted by Rihanna, Amal Clooney and Donatella Versace. And just when we thought that nobody can beat the trio, we’re surprised with an unexpected choice for next year’s Met. Harry Styles, a fashion icon in the making, has been chosen to co-host the year’s event. It’s the singer’s first time to attend the gala yet he’s given the responsibility to lead. But Styles is not alone as Lady Gaga and Serena Williams completes the list of hosts for the event. Gucci’s creative director Alessandro Michele will also join in helping Anna Wintour oversee the event.

It’s Going To Be Campy

Met Gala 2019

And by ‘campy’, we meant a little bit of exaggeration here and there. From last year’s “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination” theme, this year doesn’t back down on the extravagant. Inspired by Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay “Notes on Camp,” the gala’s new theme is called “Camp: Notes on Fashion.” The essay was about the “love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration” and “style at the expense of content.” This only tells us that we will be seeing grand displays of creativity and colour on the red carpet. A flamboyant display of, probably, theatricality leads us to the style sponsor we should probably know by now.

Gucci

Met Gala 2019

Yes, Gucci, as expected, is next year’s sponsor. We have all been treated to the brand’s theatrics through their runway shows. This is what puts Alessandro Michelle as one of the co-hosts of the gala. According to him, nothing has embraced the meaning of camp quite like Sontag did. To Michelle, camp is “the unique ability of combining high art and pop culture.” Gucci’s involvement also ties Harry Styles on the gala as the brand’s ambassador. With Gucci as sponsor, Michelle as co-host, Styles’ first Met Gala has truly been blessed.

First Monday Of May

Met Gala 2019

The gala has always been set on the first Monday of May. Through an Instagram post, the Metropolitan Museum of Art has confirmed that it will be held on May 6. After the event, the exhibition will then run from May 9 to September 9, 2019.

If you think you’ve already seen the wildest, grandest, most extravagant Met Gala, you better wait for 2019 because the gala will only outshine itself.
