We Need To Stop Expecting Too Much From Childhood Favorite Remakes

By

Sitting in between two generations, it’s kind of hard to put into words about how I feel for remakes. I grew up watching, reading, or playing them and seeing them on a different form with a different treatment got me curious. How are they going to change it up with respect to its original form? It’s safe to say that I didn’t really get all positive answers for this. While there are great remakes of some childhood favorites, we’re still plagued by “bad ones”. Unfortunately, not everyone thinks this way. At least that’s what the figures suggest.

It was really hard for me to understand what’s so likeable about these series. They’ve completely disregarded the original form of what they’re remaking, I thought. Yet it’s the mindset of someone from the generation of the former—we’re expecting too much from these remakes. “It has to look the same, if not feel the same.” While we’re dissecting the storylines of these series, we’re completely missing out on the purpose of these series. It’s not for us.

We’re Reading Them Wrong

I’ve read a lot of Archie comics as a child. So seeing ‘Riverdale’ on Netflix felt like a joke to me. I couldn’t find a trace of the characters nor the story from the comics. But then, ‘Riverdale’ is not Archie Comics. Its Wikipedia page even literally says that it’s “based on the characters of Archie Comics”. It’s not based on Archie Comics per se. They just took the characters and wrote a whole new story around them. The same idea applies with ‘The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’. It’s actually based on the comic book series of the same ‘Sabrina The Teenage Witch’.

We’ve had our time on these series and there’s really no point in expecting too much from them. This also applies to the ‘Mulan’ remake. We all thought we’re going get a musical and a Li Shang but apparently we won’t. Remakes will be done, left and right. From The Little Mermaid to Shrek—there’s no stopping these remakes. And the only way we won’t get a headache while watching them is to set the expectations low. Might as well have none at all. It’s only as simple as “don’t like it, don’t watch it”. Saves lives, I promise. Yet this is only speaking for the series in general. Still there are series that are really bad in terms of cinematography and script. But that’s a different story.

There’s a lot more remakes set to be released on the following year. More expectations comes with more disappointments. Maybe it just is the era of dark remakes and bad decisions can be done in the process of remaking these classics. A word to producers: stop making these remakes if you’re not sure it’s going to be as good as ‘A Star Is Born’. Some originals should just be left alone and untouched. While we’re at it, I just have to put this out there: leave ‘Clueless’ alone, please.
